Dental Extractions in Preston (Tooth Removal):
When Necessary and What to Expect

Tooth extraction is a common dental procedure performed to remove a damaged or problematic tooth from the jawbone. While dentists prioritise saving your natural teeth, extraction may be necessary in various situations. Here at Watling Street Road Dentist & Implant Clinic in Fulwood and Preston, we understand this can be a concern, and we’re dedicated to providing gentle and efficient care throughout the process.

Reasons for Dental Extractions in Preston Fulwood

At Watling Street Road Dental, we understand the importance of a complete and healthy smile. Dental bridges offer a reliable and long-lasting way to replace missing teeth and prevent these potential complications. Here, we’ll delve into the different types of bridges available and how they can benefit you:

Severe Tooth Damage

Teeth with extensive decay, cracks, or fractures that cannot be repaired with fillings or crowns may require extraction to prevent infection or further damage.

Advanced Gum Disease

When gum disease (periodontitis) loosens a tooth significantly or damages the supporting bone, extraction may be necessary to prevent further bone loss and potential tooth loss.

Malpositioned/Non-functioning Teeth

Wisdom teeth that are poorly positioned or impacted (stuck under the gum) can cause pain, infection, or crowding. Other non-functional teeth might also need removal to avoid complications.

Orthodontic Treatment

In some orthodontic cases, tooth extraction might be necessary to create space for proper tooth alignment.

Types of Tooth Extractions

While tooth-coloured fillings are a great choice for many situations, there are alternative solutions depending on specific needs:

Simple Extractions:

These involve visible teeth in the mouth and are typically performed under local anaesthesia.

Surgical Extractions:

Needed for teeth that are impacted, broken below the gum line, or not fully erupted. These procedures may involve bone removal, gum tissue manipulation, or tooth sectioning. Local anaesthesia with or without sedation is often used.

Healing Time After Tooth Extraction

Healing from a tooth extraction typically takes about a week for the initial discomfort to subside. Complete gum healing takes 3-4 weeks, and full jawbone healing can take several months.

  • Single Tooth Replacement
  • Multiple Teeth Replacement
  • Full Arch or Complete Tooth Loss

Generally, individuals with good overall health, adequate bone density in the jaw, and healthy gums are suitable candidates for dental implants. A thorough evaluation by a dentist or oral surgeon is necessary.

Dental implants offer several advantages, including improved stability, functionality, and aesthetics compared to other tooth replacement options. They also help prevent bone loss in the jaw.

The duration of dental implant surgery typically ranges from one to two hours per implant, but this can vary based on factors like the complexity of the case and the need for additional procedures

Frequently Asked Questions

When is a tooth extraction unavoidable, and can you always try to save the tooth first?

Saving a natural tooth is always our preference, and we will explore every reasonable option first, including fillings, crowns, or root canal treatment. An extraction is recommended when a tooth is too severely decayed or damaged to be restored, is causing infection that cannot be resolved conservatively, is impacted and causing problems, or needs to be removed as part of an orthodontic treatment plan. We never remove teeth unnecessarily, and we always explain our reasoning clearly.

Will a tooth extraction be painful?

The area is numbed thoroughly before any work begins, and you should feel pressure and movement but not pain during the procedure. If at any point you feel sharp pain, let us know immediately and we will ensure you are properly numb before continuing. Post-extraction soreness over the following two to three days is normal, and most patients manage comfortably with standard over-the-counter pain relief.

What should I do after a tooth extraction to help the socket heal?

For the first 24 hours, avoid rinsing vigorously, eating on the affected side, smoking, or drinking through a straw. After 24 hours, gentle salt-water rinses help keep the socket clean. Eat soft foods for a few days and avoid very hot drinks until the area has settled. We provide a full written aftercare guide at the time of your appointment.

What is a dry socket, and how do I avoid it?

A dry socket occurs when the blood clot that forms in the extraction site is dislodged or dissolves before the wound has had time to heal, exposing the underlying bone. It is more common following lower wisdom tooth extractions. Symptoms include a dull, throbbing ache that worsens a few days after the extraction. Avoiding smoking, straws, and vigorous rinsing in the first 48 hours significantly reduces the risk. If you develop dry socket, please contact us and we can apply a soothing dressing to aid healing.

After a tooth is removed, what are my options for replacing it?

We always discuss replacement options at the time of extraction or beforehand. The main options are a dental implant, a dental bridge, or a partial denture. Each has different costs, timescales, and implications for the surrounding teeth. Leaving a gap without replacement can, over time, cause neighbouring teeth to shift and the jawbone to shrink in that area. We are happy to talk through options at your consultation, and you can book online whenever suits you.

We are currently not accepting new NHS patients. A new private patient check-up is £50 (Incl. 2 X-rays)
