Denture Types

At Watling Street Road Dental, we understand the importance of a complete and healthy smile. Dental bridges offer a reliable and long-lasting way to replace missing teeth and prevent these potential complications. Here, we’ll delve into the different types of bridges available and how they can benefit you:

Complete Dentures

If you're missing all your teeth in an upper or lower jaw, complete dentures provide a full smile restoration. These dentures are crafted from high-quality materials for optimal comfort and aesthetics.

Partial Dentures

For individuals with some remaining natural teeth, partial dentures offer a targeted solution. They seamlessly fill in gaps left by missing teeth, providing essential support and stability for your remaining dentition.

Immediate Dentures:
A Seamless Transition

In some cases, immediate dentures can be placed right after tooth extraction. This allows you to avoid being without teeth during the healing period. However, it's important to note that bones and gums shrink over time, especially during the initial healing months. This shrinkage may necessitate adjustments or a complete denture once the healing process is complete. Our dentist will discuss this process thoroughly with you during your consultation.

Implant-Retained Dentures:
The Future of Denture Stability

For superior stability and function, implant-retained dentures offer a revolutionary approach. These dentures utilise strategically placed dental implants for support, eliminating the common issues of instability associated with traditional dentures. They are also a cost-effective alternative to other implant-based restorations and, being removable, are easy to maintain and clean.

  • Single Tooth Replacement
  • Multiple Teeth Replacement
  • Full Arch or Complete Tooth Loss

Generally, individuals with good overall health, adequate bone density in the jaw, and healthy gums are suitable candidates for dental implants. A thorough evaluation by a dentist or oral surgeon is necessary.

Dental implants offer several advantages, including improved stability, functionality, and aesthetics compared to other tooth replacement options. They also help prevent bone loss in the jaw.

The duration of dental implant surgery typically ranges from one to two hours per implant, but this can vary based on factors like the complexity of the case and the need for additional procedures

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of dentures do you offer, and how do I know which is right for me?

We offer both full (complete) dentures for patients who have lost all their teeth in one or both jaws, and partial dentures for those who still have some natural teeth remaining. Dentures can be made from different materials, including acrylic and metal-based options, and the right choice depends on the number of missing teeth, the condition of your remaining teeth and gums, and your lifestyle preferences. Your dentist will assess and advise at your appointment.

How long does it take to get used to wearing dentures?

A period of adjustment is completely normal. Speaking and eating with new dentures takes practice, and most patients notice the most significant improvement within the first few weeks as the muscles in the lips, cheeks, and tongue adapt. Some initial soreness on the gum ridges is also common and usually resolves with adjustments. We ask that patients return for follow-up visits after fitting so we can make any modifications needed for comfort.

My dentures keep coming loose. Is there anything that can be done?

Loose dentures are one of the most common complaints we hear, and it often results from gradual changes in the shape of the jaw and gum ridges after tooth loss. Solutions include relining the denture to improve the fit, making a new set, or, for a more permanent and stable solution, considering implant-retained dentures. Implant-supported dentures click onto two or more implants and provide significantly better stability without the use of adhesives.

Can I sleep in my dentures?

Most dentists recommend removing dentures at night to allow the gum tissue to rest and recover. Wearing dentures continuously, including during sleep, increases the risk of sore spots, gum problems, and fungal infections. Storing your dentures in clean water or a denture-soaking solution overnight also helps maintain their shape and hygiene.

Are dentures available on the NHS?

Yes, basic dentures are available under NHS dental treatment. Private dentures offer a wider choice of materials, better aesthetics, and a more tailored fit. Whether you go NHS or private, we will discuss your options honestly at your appointment so you can make the right choice for your budget and needs. You can also book an appointment online.

We are currently not accepting new NHS patients. A new private patient check-up is £50 (Incl. 2 X-rays)
